SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Sameer Desai

Masters of Science: Epidemiology and Biostatistics, UBC, Graduate Student

Sameer is a graduate student at the esteemed University of British Columbia pursuing a Masters of Science Degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He completed his undergraduate degree, a Bachelors of Science degree with a major in Health Sciences at Simon Fraser Unversity in 2013 and then undertook the graduate degree in 2015.

Having an interest in health sciences and a passion for helping others, going ahead into the field of epidemiology (the study of population and public health) was a natural choice for Sameer. While doctors treat symptoms of disease, epidemiologists seek to discover why a particular health problem is occuring in the first place. They conduct, gather and analyze research and data and then share this information with communities to improve the health of these communities. He is excited to use his formal educational training to encourage healthy living in populations by either being a research associate, professor or health data analyst.

Sameer has perserved through many challenges in life and managed to remain committed to his educational goals and aspirations to inpsire his children and community. Sameer is married to Maryam Saeed and they have two young children together, Musa and Isa. Aside from his busy family, school and work life, Sameer tries to make time to vounteer at the local mosque and give back to his community. 

Saarah Malawiya

Bachelors of Environmental Engineering Technology, BCIT- 3rd Year Student

Saarah is pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering degree in the field of Environmental Technology. She has already completed a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Systems Technology from BCIT in 2013. Having discovered her love for the environment, Saarah is committed to learning how to reduce the human foot print and share her knowledge with the next generation. Currently, Saarah volunteers her time with Earth Bites to teach elementary students how to grow their own food, harvest it and create nutritional snacks.

Saarah has a passion for giving back to the community and has volunteered in several organizations including City of Surrey, Newton Senior Centre, Surrey Memorial Hospital and BCIT Women in Engineering Campaign spokesperson.  She is also a certified Lifeguard/Swim Instructor.

 

One of Saarah’s future goals is to teach children about agriculture, nutrition and ways to save our planet. Saarah’s ambition, integrity and passion to help the community are inspiring and admirable. We’re pleased to award Saarah the Kamrul Suleman Bhamji Scholarship!! We couldn’t be prouder of you. Thank you for being a positive role model for girls in our family and community.

 

Asma Kandawala

International Development, Bachelor of Arts, Honours, York University- 3rd Year Student

Asma is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in the field of International Development. Within this degree, she has chose to focus on the region of Africa and has specialized in the area of political economy and the environment. During her trip to Kenya, she realized how the most basic needs of people such as clean water were not being met. This inspired her to pursue an education which would give her a platform to work in developing nations and implement sustainable solutions to issues pertaining to human, political or enviromental rights. Asma moved to Toronto at the age of 18 to attend York University and works multiple jobs to fund her education and living costs.

 

Asma hopes to utilize her education to work on clean water, education and human rights projects around the world. She aims to build communities from the ground up in ways that are best suited for human and enviromental well being. She is a strong, independent and hard working young woman and is very deserving of the Kamrul S. Bhamji Scholarship Award.  We wish Asma all the best!

Sarah Craveiro

Mathematics & History, Bachelor of Arts, KPU- 4th Year Student

Sarah is completing a Bachelor of Arts degee with a double major in Mathematics and History. Sarah hopes to use the knowledge she has accumulated over the past six years and enter the field of education. Whether as a teacher, professor, outreach or youth worker or motivational speaker, Sarah's passion in life comes from knowing the power that education has over a community. 

 

Sarah has been volunteering at the YWCA and works with grade seven students transitioning into high school. Alongside with the various programs she volunteers with, she works at Tien Sher Homes. Sarah is a hard working individual that aims for excellence in all she does. Furthermore, she is an exceptional role model for the young adults in our family and community. We are very proud to award Sarah with the Kamrul S. Bhamji Scholarship Award and wish her all the best!

Aaliyah Rasheed

Human Resources, Business, KPU- 4th Year Student

Aaliyah is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource Management. She is passionate about working with people and is talented in helping others help themselves. As an HR professional, Aaliyah hopes to use her skills to move orgranziations closer to reaching its objectives by strategically aligning their functions with their organizational strategy. On a personal level, Aaliyah is exceptional at balancing her priorities in life while in school. Aaliyah also holds a full time position as an Autoplan Agent at Meiers Insurance.

 

As the first grandchild of Kamrul S. Bhamji who will be graduating with a university degree; she is motivated to mentor and guide her younger cousins. Aaliyah will be graduating this December. We couldn't be prouder! Way to go Aaliyah!
