APPLICATION EXAMPLE:
APPLICATION FORM:
Full Name: Sarah Ann Craveiro
Date of Birth: April 27, 1990
Field of Study: Mathematics/History
Year of Study: 4
Academic Institution: Kwantlen Polytechnic University
• Which field of study are you pursuing and why?
In my current degree, I am pursuing the fields of Mathematics and History. My interest
in both of these subjects is completely different. I have always loved mathematics and
am more of a numbers person than a literature person. It comes easy to me, and I know
that not many people have the same attitude towards mathematics of any level. I have
embraced this unique fact about myself and focused on developing my knowledge base
further.
On the other hand, history was never my favourite subject or my first choice for a
university degree. Throughout high school, all of my Social Studies teachers were sub-
par in comparison to the teachers I had in all other subjects. One poor teacher ruined
history for me, and it was not until I decided to switch my major in my third year of
university that I found this love for the past that I never had explored before. There is a
lot to learn from past world events, whether local or global, leading up to the present way
of life.
Although my degree focuses on Mathematics and History, I have a different profession
in mind for my future. I want to take the knowledge I have built up over the past six
years and enter into the field of education. Whether as a teacher, professor, outreach or
youth worker, or motivational speaker, my passion in life comes from knowing the power
that education has over the community, in particularly young adults. I, like many, had a
rocky upbringing and what pushed me to strive for excellence were my love for learning
and my passion for teaching others what wisdom I had developed at a young age. I
want to carry this with me and insight others to see beyond themselves and beyond their
circumstances.
• Why are you deserving of this scholarship?
I believe that I deserve this scholarship because I have dedicated my entire life to my
passion for education. Since I was seventeen years old, I have fully supported myself,
mentally, emotionally, and financially. I moved out of my family’s home at eighteen
years old and took on three jobs to be able to pay my bills, support myself, and save
for university, which I could finally afford one year later. From then until now, I have
not stopped working (still sometimes multiple jobs at a time) and have not taken one
semester off from school since 2011. I have put every ounce of energy into working and
studying in order to keep myself in school and to keep my grades up. After six years of
university, I am entering my final semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.95. My success
in education has always been my top priority, and I will continue to keep that in my mind
even after my time at university has come to an end. And although I will graduate at
the end of this year, I do believe that I will return to university, whether to complete a
Master’s degree, or to just be able to enjoy the feeling of being in a classroom again.
I also believe that I am deserving of this scholarship because I fully understand the power
that education has in the community and how imperative it is for young adults to strive
towards obtaining a post-secondary diploma, certificate, or degree. I am a product of an
exceptional education experience, and I could not be more grateful for the opportunities
that I have been given and that I have fought for in my life in order to be able to say that I
am finally graduating.
• How can you use your education to contribute to your family and/or community in the
future?
I am very much looking forward to using my education in the future to contribute to my
family and my community. Over the past two years, I have been volunteering with the
YWCA and participating in a youth education program for Grade 7 girls entering into
high school. Through this experience, I have not only learned a lot about myself, but I
have been able to see, first-hand, the impact that sharing your own wisdom can have on a
younger generation. I want to be that individual, in the family, or in the community, that
those younger than me can come to for advice, knowledge, and motivation. I want to be
able to inspire others to want to continue their education after high school, and not to just
feel like they have to in order to get somewhere in life. I enjoy learning and I hope that
through my own family or as a member of a volunteer organization, I can support others
to follow the same path.
I also believe that not only have I built up an understanding of my respective fields of
study, but I have learned a lot about the education system and learning strategies. I want
to be able to prove to those around me that a university education is not just a piece of
paper that only gets you on a higher pay scale, but is something that will inspire you, and
will push you to believe in yourself and achieve things you thought were beyond your
reach. Although your university education may only be four years, you will undoubtedly
carry it with you for the rest of your life.
